Home healthcare is a broad term used to refer to a wide range of services given to a person or people more so the elderly for an illness at his/her residence. There is insufficient qualified staff. Currently it is safe to assume that the agencies that offer such services is in need of more employees. The number of skilled personnel is lagging behind and this trend is expected to continue to the near future. Luckily there is a large number of aides currently undergoing training and are expected to counter this trend once they are released to the job market.

Government is imposing stern rules and regulations regarding the operations of the agencies. This has to be done to ensure high standard services are provided. Such regulations involve pushing for the bill in which all employees will be vetted based on their qualifications. Also in the near future the hiring of nurses by agencies on a part time basis may not be allowed.

Keeping up to date technologically is also affecting the industry. Modern powerful equipments are replacing the old obsolete systems. The agencies are struggling to keep up the pace, with pressure mounting from their clients who expect them to embrace the technology for their collective good. A good example is providing the monitoring chip which detects changes in pulse rate is replacing the old method of measuring pulse rate at given time intervals.

There is poor payment of the staff. A key component in maintaining staff in an agency is the amount of salary earned. Shocking figures reveal that close to a half of the personnel in this profession work and live at or below the poverty level. This is a disturbing trend but the agencies have not obtained some clear cut answers on how to address the issue without being declared bankrupt. Such a salary totally demotivates the workers.

The industry is not going down just because of the above problems. There is always a non-governmental organisation and donors who are willing to chip in.
