Guide To Choosing Lifeguard Swimsuits For Women

By Lila Bryant

When it comes to suits for female lifeguards, there are a few choices available. If you are shopping for one of these suits, there is some information to help you. Selecting the right lifeguard swimsuits for women does not have to be difficult.

Generally, when we think about female lifeguards we tend to think of them in traditional one piece suits. If the one piece swimsuit is what you want, you have several choices. You can choose thick or thin straps. The back can be traditional, racerback, or keyhole styles. For lifeguards, the swimsuit should be comfortable enough to be in it for an extended period of time, wet or dry. It should also allow the proper amount of movement without causing raw spots. You can choose different colors, but red and navy blue are the most common two that are chosen.

Tankinis and bikinis are the options for two piece suits. Bikinis can have different styles and shaping for tops and bottoms that are ideal for lifeguarding tasks. The fabric should be stretchy to allow an adequate activity level, but still stay in place on your body. A tankini is a good choice if you prefer coverage like a traditional one piece provides but you would rather have a two piece suit. Many female lifeguards choose the bikini or tankini style because the neckline is lower than a one piece suit.

Reversible suits are another option. One sided is the color you have chosen while the other side is another color and often does not have the chest lettering. Many female guards like this feature because they do not have to purchase another suit for off-duty swimming. They have a second suit that perfectly matches their tan lines.

Lifeguarding shorts are another option available for female guards. You have a few choices with these shorts. Board shorts, also known as surfing shorts, are common because they are lightweight and loose but not bulky. A functional style is another choice. These shorts fit to the female body more than board shorts, but they have multiple pockets. The fabric tends to be thicker but it is not constricting. They are specifically designed for professions like lifeguarding.

Once you have determined the style you desire, you will need to select the size. It is important to make sure the swimsuit fits properly. To do this, you will need the measurements of your torso, hips, waist, and bust sections. Use these measurements to find your size in the manufacturer's sizing chart. If your measurements fall between two on the chart, choose the higher one.

Coverage is important but comfort and durability also matter. Be sure to select fabrics that are not stiff and restricting. The swimsuit should be made for the specific water conditions of your lifeguarding job. If, for example, you are a guard at a pool, the suit should withstand constant exposure to chlorine or if you are a guard at the beach, your suit should be made for saltwater and sand exposure.

Although there are many factors that are important in the swimsuit you choose, you should make sure that it is something allowed by your employer. Possible employer restrictions are equally important and you must consider any dress code that is required. You choices may be limited for the styles that you can choose.
