Information On Black Mental Health

By David Cooper

Unlike the few African American celebrities and other public figures that are faced with medical trauma, mental health continues to silently take the lives of many black people. According to statistics, black people are more likely to be faced by these conditions unlike other individuals. This has raised a lot of concern and many individuals are now looking closely towards this predicament. In connection to this, the following is an article on black mental health.

Research has brought to light the fact that a majority of the blacks, especially those who have gone to school, are very reluctant to seek medical assistance for their conditions unlike the whites. Besides, they are also more prone to suffer from conditions such as these due to the environments in which they are raised, which is full of stress.

One of the main reasons why the blacks suffer in silence is due to their state of poverty and joblessness. Culture is also another factor which plays an active role in contributing to such conditions. This is so in that some medics assume their conditions to be normal, hence ruling out any type of treatment which would have been helpful in such situations.

It has been discovered that, apart from the above mentioned factors, the health care system is also to blame for all this. This is most evident in health facilities which have a majority of white employees. As a result of feeling ignored and neglected, these persons end up facing additional conditions such as depression which may even make the attempt suicide.

From the olden days, African Americans have made their suffering to be a normal part of their lives. In the times of slavery, suffering from this illness made one receive more inhumane treatment. This included severe beating and other forms of abuse, which made most of the slaves to hide their condition.

This stigma is still evident in the modern world. An example of this can be seen in workplaces, where the black who are mentally ill never disclose their conditions in fear of losing their job. They still face a lot of discrimination hence making them know that revealing their states of mind may result in them being fired and a more desirable person taking their places.

When it comes to the broader picture, it is evident that people who travel from one country to another are more prone to acquiring mental illness. This is a common scenario for the black community, who move to the white nations in search of a better life. Children are even more affected as they have more interaction opportunities with the society.

In conclusion, there should be increased campaigns on the mental illness situation in the black community. They are supposed to be aware that this is just a disease like any other, and there is nothing to shy away from. They should also be encouraged to seek treatment in due time.
