Information On San Antonio Eye Specialists

Vision in humans is achieved through the eyes. This is made possible by the rod and cone cells of the retina. The cells also enable people to differentiate color, have vision, and perceive depth. Eyes can perceive over ten million colors. San Antonio is a good place to visit when one wants to understand more about eye. San Antonio eye specialists can care for all diseases that affect eyes.

Eyes are not shaped like perfect spheres. Rather, they are composed of a peripheral and frontal units joined together. The frontal unit is what is referred to as the cornea while the sclera makes the peripheral part. Cornea is transparent and shaped like a curve. It links to the bigger peripheral sclera through the limbus ring. Sclera measures 12 mm whereas the cornea measures 8 mm typically. Pupils are surrounded by the colored parts called iris.

The iris has two kinds of muscles called the sphincter and dilator muscles, which adjust the size of the pupil. Light from outside enters the eyes through the cornea. The retina is responsible for converting light falling on its light-sensitive cells into electrical signals which are transported to the brain for processing. The electrical signals are carried by the optic nerves. Ophthalmoscope is the device used to see inside the eyes.

The difference in eye size among adults ranges between one and two millimeters. This fact is consistent among all ethnicities. There is also an observed difference in vertical, horizontal, and sagittal measurements. Differences in these measurements are not gender-based or age-based. From birth to age three, eyes undergo rapid growth and by thirteen years, they attain maximum size.

The make-up of the eye consists of three coats enclosing three other transparent structures. The name fibrous tunic is used to refer to the outermost coat. Composition of the fibrous tunic is cornea and sclera. Vascular tunic is the named given to the middle layer. Choroid, ciliary body, and iris make up the vascular layer. The innermost layer is called retina. These layers can be observed through a device called an ophthalmoscope.

The aforementioned coats contain flexible lens, vitreous body, and aqueous humour within them. The aqueous humour is present in the anterior chamber as well as the posterior chamber. The anterior chamber is located between the iris and cornea while the posterior chamber occurs between the lens and iris. The suspensory ligament is responsible for suspending the lens in place. The vitreous body occurs behind the lens.

The movement of the eyes is done by six muscles. These muscles are superior rectus, superior oblique, medial rectus, inferior oblique, lateral rectus, and medial rectus. These muscles exert a torque on the globe which causes it to move in pure rotation. The translation that occurs is about one millimeter.

Eyes are prone to suffering from several kinds of diseases resulting from different causes including disorders, diseases, and aging. Aging causes physiological changes that cause health problems in the individual. Newborns suffer from certain conditions from the time of birth. Eye care is provided by various specialists including ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians.
