Traveling Summer Tips For Savvy Assisted Living Putnam County FL Residents

By Anna Turner

Everyone loves to take a trip during the summer months. Seniors living in the assisted living Putnam County FL neighbors often enjoy traveling together. If you and your friends are planning a trip this summer there are a few things to keep in mind.

Visit your doctor before going on a long trip. If you plan to travel internationally, you need a physical examination and certain vaccinations. Be sure to let your doctor know your intentions, and request enough refills of medication to get through the trip. Also, ask your physician to print-out a current copy of medications being taken by you and your health condition.

Make an appointment to talk to your doctor about your plans to leave town. Your doctor might want to do a physical. Ask for medication refills so you will not run out on your trip. If you plan to leave the country, be sure you take the appropriate vaccinations. Ask your doctor to give you a print out of all your medicines and your conditions just in case the information needs to be passed on to another health provider.

Get to packing. If you are not up to doing all the packing ask a neighbor or caregiver to help you get some of it down. The caregiver might also be able to run light errands such as taking clothes to be cleaned and picking up medication. Be sure to ask them to help you with any type of trip planning, if needed.

Avoid packing for the trip. You want to only carry the items which are needed and plan to do your laundry while away. Try packing everything in only one suitcase and if you must have another bag, try to keep it small and one that you can carry with you. Also look for a small bag that can attach itself to the larger one.

Your caregiver can help make calls to get traveling accommodations needed for you. If there is a need for a wheelchair, pre-boarding, or special dietary needs, these arrangements should be made well-in-advance to ensure the availability to you. If traveling alone, you might want to arrange that someone will be available to assist you from arrival to boarding time.

Be sure to check for senior discounts for traveling and stay accommodations. Request an aisle seat if taking a long flight, it will make frequent trips to the bathroom a lot easier. Stay hydrated, keep sipping on water throughout your trip. Move around constantly while traveling by plane to prevent developing blood clots in the legs.

Check to find out if you qualify for any types of senior discounts. It is best to keep a folder with all your information and your itinerary for the trip so that you will not forget any special discounts you have coming to you. The discounts will help you save money. You might even be upgraded for special accommodations. Most importantly, enjoy yourself on your trip. Have fun sightseeing and enjoying getting around with friends and family.
