By Edwin Loft

People often go down the wrong path in regards to love when they enter into a rehab program. Men and women are often amazed by the fact that they find someone else appealing. They want to get to know them emotionally and romantically. It is important to understand that love romances in rehab programs often don't work. They are often difficult to understand and can get you into a heap of trouble. Most addicts find it hard to date someone that has a similar addiction that they do. Falling back into drug abuse is often easier when you have someone else in your life doing the same thing as you.

Finding love in rehab often seems like a good idea. You have probably shared a lot of intimate details about yourself during group meetings. When you are feeling alone, the person is probably there to make you feel happy. They may give you a boost of personal care. It is important to have supportive friends and family around you at all times. When you are fresh out of rehab, you are vulnerable to getting hurt. You have just started to learn more about yourself and the people around you seem to care.

Dating someone in rehab is a big mistake. For starters, you are extremely vulnerable to emotional abuse. Many people spend years feeling like they were abused and now a new relationship can intensify that. Your new found love may also have a relapse. If he/she goes down, you will most likely go down with the ship. After all of the hard work that you have put into your sobriety, you may end up in the same place that you were before. It is important to ask your drug/alcohol counselor about their opinion on whether or not you should be dating an addict as well.

Most addicts find that they can find love easily in a rehab. When you are around someone, you tend to talk to them about all of your fears, pains and sorrows. You begin to laugh and cry with them as well. Many women and men feel drawn to someone that understands them. In rehab, you are in close quarters with other residents 24 hours a day. You may see the treatment center as a temporary home for yourself. Often, ex-addicts find sobriety a lot easier when they are connecting with others that care about them. It is important to let your counselor know when you have any feelings in regards to someone else.

Rehab is a special time for everyone. It is a place where the addict can feel safe about getting sober. It is a great place to learn how to be sober for life. If you think about it, love can happen anywhere. However, think about your sobriety first and how to stay that way for life. In any relationship interferes with that, it is best to cut it off and move onto a relationship that can actually keep you in sobriety. Love happens when we least expect.
