Your Love For An Alcohol And Drug Addict

By John Wingers

If you have a loved one that is addicted to a drug, it is painful to watch. You are often seeing them feeling sad, high and angry at the same time. Most addicts steal from their parents and friends in order to pay for their addiction. It is important not to take this personal. This is happening mainly due to the fact that the addict's body is physically dependent on the drug. If they do not get their "fix", they can have a seizure or get heart palpitations. It is scary for the addict to experience.

Many parents wonder why their son or daughter cannot just stop taking drugs. Many parents often say, "Why don't you just stop taking drugs already!" It is a hard experience for a lot of parents to go through. What most parents don't understand is that when a person's body becomes dependent on a drug, they cannot stop. It is a lot like a food addiction. Have you ever wondered why obese people keep on eating food that continues to make them gain weight? It is because they have an addiction. They cannot stop eating these types of food without professional help.

If the addict does not want to get help, you can force them to get help by a court order. You must go to your local county office and file a petition to have your loved one stand before a judge and get them legally forced into a treatment program. In the state of Florida, this is often referred to as a Marchman Act. It varies from state to state. However, in many cases, the addict is too intoxicated to make decisions for themselves. A judge may see it as being necessary to get the addict help before their situation becomes fatal.

A lot of addicts feel free from drugs and alcohol once they enter rehab. Most rehab programs combine faith with sober living. The addict is taught life skills on how to get a job and get back into society. The memories that an addict has is often hard for them to overcome. If you look at life in a nutshell, you will be able to see that addicts tend to respond best when they are in a controlled environment. When they experience structure, they begin to see that living sober for life is possible.

Treatment for alcohol and drug addiction is not always the same. In fact, most treatment programs are either holistic, 12 step or faith based. Many addiction programs involve horse and animal therapy. This kind of therapy works well because an addict is given a task to take care of an animal while they are in treatment. They learn how to bond with an animal and the animal often brings out love inside the addicts heart. They can communicate their feelings better. It is an important step for someone to take that is in rehab. Faith based programs mostly focus on your relationship with God and the fact that he loves you enough to want to see you get sober.
